Downtown Urban Design Strategy: Keeping it Kimberley
The feedback period ends today, July 7, 2023. Thank you to all who provided in online feedback and attended the in-person engagement sessions in February and June of 2023! Your feedback and thoughts on the future of Kimberley’s downtown have been integral in developing design concepts for the downtown core and updating the vision and guiding principles for the Downtown Urban Design Strategy.

What is a Downtown Urban Design Strategy?
A Downtown Urban Design Strategy includes a vision for the downtown as well as design guidance and strategies for the public realm. It establishes a framework and provides guidance to Staff and Council to plan for necessary investments and enhancements for the downtown over time including coordination of infrastructure improvements and upgrades.
Why do we need a Downtown Urban Design Strategy?
It has been close to 40 years since the City went through a comprehensive visioning process for the downtown and it is time to reflect on the possibilities for the future of downtown Kimberley. Climate change and a global pandemic have impacted our infrastructure and the way we live, work, and use spaces like the downtown. We must plan for a downtown that is resilient to the changing climate and events with global impact.
The City is embarking on a Downtown Urban Design Strategy to develop a new vision for downtown and address the changing needs of our community. The Strategy will provide a consistent and coordinated approach to improvements and investments in the downtown to respond to the needs of the community.
The Downtown Urban Design Strategy will build on and reinforce direction in the Official Community Plan and other recently completed projects including the Active Transportation Network Plan, housing availability and affordability Zoning Bylaw amendments, and the Signage Strategy.

Timeline and traffic flow
We need to make sure we find ways to gather ALL input from residents. I did come to the open house in June but saw very few people there, these should be packed. First I think the traffic flow is crucial. One-way streets can congest areas that currently are some of our busiest. I believe you were looking for more parking, but are idle cars the main focus of Kimberley? Sure we need parking, but it could be a couple of blocks from the center of town, it does not need to be the center of town! St Mary's Ave is currently the only alternative route to the platzl from the East. It avoids using the stop light, which is getting busier by the day. To turn it one way would make a snarl again on the main route through the core. The downhill traffic from Spokane St should be primary and a stop on St. Mary's could be added as well as a convex mirror for easier identification of Spokane St traffic. DO NOT MAKE THIS A ONE-WAY. It complicates getting to City Hall parking and into Mark Creek Market. SPOKANE ST coming down from Selkirk High School and all the neighborhoods above the city needs special attention. Firstly, the most vulnerable of the traffic is FOOT Traffic! But BOTH pedestrians and vehicles need close consideration. Any disruption of this street redirects all traffic to the seriously dangerous corner at the bottom of Halpin and Hywy 95A. We need better-protected walking routes, for groups of teenagers, families with small children, and strollers from Selkirk Hill to and from the core.
