Affordable Housing

I see lots is being done to build new homes. But all this new development as with all the new development in the couple of years is not affordable to seniors, low income families and individual, or those with disabilities. When is the city going to address these demographics when it comes to future housing initiative. I have not seen anything in the last few years, that addresses the housing needs for these groups. The city approved the townhouses on Rotary Drive - at $400-$500 thousand to buy. That is not affordable for those with limited incomes. seniors do not necessarily want to take on a mortgage of that amount. Low income families/individuals may or may not be able to even get financing and/or the debt may be too high to afford if they are able to get it. It is great that developers are coming forward to request new areas of Kimberley be reasoned for housing, BUT when is the city and council going to start looking for developers to build who can build affordable housing - and I mean affordable to the people hoping to live there and not just affordable to the developers. just reading the Columbia Basin Trust magazine and there is a small article in there about affordable housing being built in Sparwood to meet the needs of their community. If they can do it, why can’t the city do the same here?

We need affordable rental properties for seniors, low income individuals and families, not just new homes and townhouses available for purchase.
